Interior Health has released its latest update on the results of COVID-19 testing at Big White Mountain. As of December 29, there are 12 active cases in isolation on the mountain, with an additional five isolating elsewhere. The total number of cases since the initial cluster was reported on December 15 is 111 – an increase of 15 cases from the last update on December 22.

Of the 111 known COVID-19 cases linked to this cluster, 77 reside on mountain and 94 individuals have recovered.

“It has been a challenging period for everyone – guests, residents and especially our workforce – since the cluster was first announced two weeks ago, and this latest news comes with a huge sigh of relief,” says Michael J. Ballingall, Senior Vice President at Big White Ski Resort Ltd.

“All of us associated with the resort want to thank the health care professionals and doctors who have helped the community through these trying times. Tracking, isolating and managing this cluster would not have been possible without their support. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the Regional District and its Emergency Operations Centre, members of the community for their isolation support kits, and the RCMP for increasing patrol on the mountain. It’s obvious, when we play by the rules, we can bend the curve.”

Interior Health says many of the new cases are linked to other cases, and the small increase is not unexpected. They ask everyone to continue following the safety measures and doing their part to limit further exposures.

Big White Ski Resort Ltd, along with Interior Health, wants to remind everyone to stick to their immediate household bubble, wear a mask, avoid social gatherings, wash their hands, and follow the COVID-19 Safety Plan.

Interior Health reiterates in its release that the risk remains low for families and individuals visiting Big White Mountain who follow public health guidance.

Interior Health will continue testing for COVID-19 on the mountain at the Happy Valley Adventure Park. Due to New Year’s Day, the next update will be provided on Tuesday, January 5.

Since the COVID-19 Cluster was announced, RCMP have been providing additional resources on weekends to monitor and respond to calls regarding social gatherings. On New Year’s Eve, there will be an increased RCMP presence on the mountain to provide assistance during what is normally one of the busiest nights of the year. There will be no firework display for New Year’s Eve at Big White this year.
